Today one of my reader’s gave me a tidbit of information that lead me to an original work on the little known US Manila mint. The original article I wrote was based on quality information found in a presentation done in the 70’s, this work below was done in 1921 when the Manila Mint was still young. The author of this work interviewed the mint director. The information I am presenting below seems to be the root information used in many articles and books that refer to this mint. click on each page to view it.

Have you ever really thought about it? Why can that piece of paper get you real tangible things? Why do people want it in trade for a physical item that took labor and time to make. Is money real? That number in your bank account or on your credit card statement, is that money? What if we no longer had coin and currency, and we all used a credit card like item to change numbers in a computer somewhere, how is that money?

Let’s back this conversation up to a time before any of us were alive. When people lived off of the land. For the most part farmers really did not need money, just land. He had two hands he could build his house farm his land and have many kids to help sew seed and harvest his crop. A way to trade with another farmer or dry goods store was only necessary once in a while. If a farmer did not have any money, that did not mean he would starve( unless a famine or other type of natural disaster was in the works.)

Trade back then had a few problems; Joe may have a pig and Tom may have some wheat, but Joe may not need wheat, he may need corn and how much corn or wheat is a pig worth. This is the problem that traders had. Originally animal pelts became a way to trade. Everybody accepted that a pelt had value, and it was easy to carry and to use in a negotiation. Gold and silver existed, but not enough of it was available for everyone to use. The value of a pelt was still at that time a perception of value. It only had value because someone wanted it. The person that wanted it knew someone else would want it, or he could use it his self. As abstract and in tangible as it is, the knowledge that that pelt was desired by other people made it valuable. But if for some reason it was not accepted, he had a backup. The pelt it’s self would keep him warm. So he had two reasons to want that pelt. It had a concrete value, and a non tangible value; the value of desire.

Gold and silver are more abstract and we are now moving away from the tangible. The tangible part of gold and silver is that it is pretty and we can craft beautiful objects from the metal. It can’t keep us warm , so it is less tangible it had no direct ability to improve our living. It’s intangible value of desire is it’s biggest asset. But how can we be sure that guy with the gold has real gold. That is where coins come in. Originally coins were more of a stamp of approval saying that the metal the coin is made of is gold or silver based on some kind of standard. That added another intangible asset. The asset of trust. We now trust that we have gold or silver. Money and it’s value was relatively simple and straight forward.

Now lets move a little bit further in time. Paper currency, originally was a piece of paper guaranteeing you that the bank or government had a piece of gold in their vault that they could give you at any time to redeem the paper for real hard gold coin. Now the tangible value has been reduced more, it was still something you can hold. The intangible parts were more important especially the trust. Now we have to trust the government or bank to do what they say they will do. It’s value was gold but gold was not in your hand. Yet with a bit of weariness people usually accepted it as long as we had faith in the issuing entity.

Let’s move further into the future, now people are used to using currency and most have forgotten or never lived in the days of bartering. People are now accepting that currency will buy me what I need. The general public now see money as a way to get something. The ideas of trust and intrinsic value are now blurred and not really understood, lost to the ways of the past. Gold now cannot be mined quick enough to supply the economy so the issuing entity’s ( the government) now says; We don’t need gold to back up our currency. We now will tell people that the only way you can buy or sell is if you use our currency, this law will force it’s value. The tangible value is now nothing at all, other than the paper it is printed on. the intangible value of desire and trust are what’s left. Not that it wasn’t important back in the days of trading pelts, but a dollar bill is not going to intrinsically keep you warm.

Now moving into our present we see numbers whizzing from one computer to another, each number representing the paper we used to have in our hand. We are now trusting that these numbers are not getting dropped or duplicated somewhere changing the preserved value. The government can add and remove numbers at will, and we will still desire these numbers because it will buy us bread. After all it can still be exchanged for paper currency.

We are no longer farmers, we cannot grow our own food, most of us have never killed a deer or tanned a hide or sewn our own clothes. We now rely on these numbers for our very survival. How much different is it now then it was back in the fur trading days. We have shifted almost completely from something tangible to something completely imaginary. In some ways it is light years apart, but the basic element that is common to both currencies is desire (greed). Today we have distilled out “desire” as the single most important part of our society. It is a powerful but fragile human element to rely on.

This coin was produced to celebrate the Centennial of the state of Maine’s acceptance into the Union as a free state. Maine was settled in 1604 and by royal charter was it’s own Provence, but by 1658 Maine came under control of Massachusetts. This did not sit well with the settlers of this province and to make matters worse during the war of 1812 Massachusetts did a poor job of supporting and protecting Maine form the British invaders. All of this aggravation and animosity toward Massachusetts led to Maine’s petition to the federal government to become a state. Maine was accepted as the 23rd state on March 15, 1820.
The coin was originally intended to sell at the centennial celebration in Portland Maine, but the coins got there too late, half were sold by years end and the rest though the state treasurer.

On the obverse we see Maine’s coat of arms that became the state seal. on the left we see a husbandman (farmer) resting on a scythe on the right a sailor resting on an anchor, these devices have a dual meaning. They are representing land, sea, fishing, and farming in Maine. In the middle they have a Maine pine with a Moose-Deer resting below. The pine represents the timber resource available the state motto is “Pine Tree State”. The deer is a common deer in that area. The star on top is the North star, and the motto “dirigo” directly translated means “I direct” or I Guide” As the North Star has been considered the mariner’s guide, as it here is intended to represent the State. On the reverse we see a pine wreath. The rest of the coin’s design is obvious and needs no explanation.

Many numismatists started out collecting Lincoln cents, and is still a favorite among collectors today. it’s has had 100 years of production to help create many varieties and oddities to collect. Many people will call this coin a penny. Even Merriam-Webster’s dictionary dances around the definition and does not directly implicate the us cent was to be called a penny. A penny is an English monetary unit, our coin is based on the centavo or cent. Since our currency is based on the Spanish milled dollar, it seems appropriate to call the smallest unit a cent. But I have called our small coin a penny in casual conversation. Calling it a penny is appropriate in my opinion because the word can remind us how diverse our heritage is, we used Spanish standards, but we spoke English and was used to using English coinage. Such a mix is the melting pot of the United States. Another neat piece of trivia is that by US law the one cent coin is NOT legal tender over 100 cents per transaction. This was to keep you from paying your taxes in pennies.

We have placed it on railroad tracks to see it get squished. Thrown it into wishing wells. Pressed them in elongating presses. Used them in science experiments. Put them inside the walls of newly built houses as a good luck charm. Stamped advertisements on them. Also stamped a second head on them as in the infamous jfk cent. Used them to replace a missing fuse in our fuse boxes (although i don’t recommend that.) Also used them as an improvised screwdriver. They have been made every year since 1909 without fail. They have been made from bronze, steel, zinc, and made from spent brass shell cartridges from WWII. the reverse of the coin was changed from the wheat reverse to the memorial reverse in 1959. Now in honor of it’s 100th anniversary the us mint is going to produce 4 new reverse designs to the cent.

I believe the new cent designs will be well accepted by the public. The new coin will be made in copper plated zinc in the same composition as the currently minted cent. A numismatic version will be made from the old 95 % copper plainchant, with identical metal content as the 1909 one cent coin, but will not be put into circulation.

Wait! Don’t click away; this will be interesting even to the most hard core strict numismatist. Why is it that when King Mint makes a mistake or makes a change that is almost noticeable that the coin becomes something of legend? A good contemporary example is the extra leaf high and extra leaf low of the Wisconsin quarter. Once the experts determined that it really was a mint error, the king has spoken. The collectors went crazy.

When you look at the evolution of numismatics, you can see a very definite trend, especially when collecting us coins. The lack of real diversity and availability of early coins has left collectors loving the hobby but yearning for more of a cool factor. We start looking at small details and making these details a big factor in price, increasing desirability. The new collectors follow down the same path. These collectables don’t tell you much about your country or heritage.
Pluto Junior divx

Exonumia is the perfect extension to collectors that want to expand their hobby and make a collection that is exciting for anyone to look at, not just your numismatist friends. This is a more challenging and much more interesting direction this hobby can take you. Touch the past with a hobo nickel, or ponder the implications of a unique love token. Or even try to understand why a postage stamp was used as money. This way of expanding your hobby is very deep and rich in history and stories and is greatly undervalued in the collecting community. That extra leaf high, well what’s to tell, the mint made a mistake, end of story. That hobo nickel tells a story of a time in US history when times were tough.

Break away from the popular trends, the pf70’s and the like. To make the expansion work, you need to understand the place and importance in our society of the exonumia piece that you want to collect. Pass the stories along to the next generation so they can enjoy it as well. Don’t get stuck just collecting a type or series of coins. You are allowed to collect anything you want, don’t artificially limit yourself because of an intense focus on a particular coin series or because of a popular way of collecting. Back up a bit and look at the big picture, you just might be surprised at what you can find to collect, and at a very reasonable cost.

For my readers from other countries, a brief description of this tumultuous time in American history is required. Reconstruction is the time period beginning at about 1863 to about 1890 Historians don’t have a firm date for the end of this period. This was the time period near the end of the United States Civil War, which raged between the years 1861 through 1865. One of the most honored Presidents, Abraham Lincoln lead the struggling country though the civil war. But soon after the war he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14 1865.

The president through most of the reconstruction period was Andrew Johnson. The reconstruction was the period when the southern states were being re-integrated back into the federal government, and the freeing of the African American slaves of the south meant financial ruin for many southern plantations. A new militant group bent on restoring the status quo rose up during this time known as the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) originally made up of ex-confederate solders. The movement was supported by a lot of southerners. This group still exists today although it is not as organized as it once was. The history of the KKK is beyond the scope of this article but it has had a huge influence during reconstruction and beyond I suggest you read up on this group to get a better understanding of this era. This was a very tough time to be from a confederate state. Still burning with a lot of hatred and bad feelings because of the horrible war with un-imaginable loss of life in the north and the south.

Alien vs. Hunter hd The south was known for it’s plantations that grew cotton. This was the main source of wealth in the south. It was known as King Cotton. The southern states provided 3/4 of the worlds cotton supply. In the north wheat was one of the main crops, and also one of the bloodiest battles during the civil war took place in a wheat field just out side the little northern village of Gettysburg in the state of Pennsylvania.

Colour Blind movie George T. Morgan the designer of the Morgan Silver dollar lived through this time. Nobody was left un-touched by the events during the war and reconstruction. I am sure he was moved and inspired to design one of the most beloved coins in US numismatics. If you take a close look in the hair of liberty you will see a wheat shaft and a cotton pod in her hair. This was to symbolize the north and the south re-united through liberty. Another symbol that we see on many US coins the Phrygian or liberty cap, also takes on a new meaning, it now can represent the freedom of all the peoples of the United States. This same symbol of reconstruction can be seen on the “V Nickel” or “Liberty Nickel” as well.

Sometimes the symbolism is easily overlooked in coinage but it is always there trying to leave a message behind for us to find. Some people will try to characterize the symbolism on our coins as trivial. I believe it is central and an essential part of the coin’s design. These coins are trying to tell you something about where they come from and what they represent. Look closely and listen to them, you may hear something unique and very interesting.

I think that the mint, when it makes gold coins like the bust or seated liberty designs from our past, they lose sight of the fact that these coins should not be made today. The message is meant to be heard from the year the coin was made. Not in a modern reprint with today’s date on it. It puts the design out of touch with the rich history that was built into the coin by it’s designers. I hope the mint can see the error in their ways.

More people are collecting coins today than they were when I got started in my teens back in th 70’s . I know the production of state quarters has caused our hobby to explode and with different ideas on what collecting coins means. I am writing this article while I am myself struggling to define who the new collectors are and what they want and how they perceive coin collecting. I have written about the subject before but I feel that I failed in properly understanding the new collector, I talk to them on myspace and other places around the net and I feel a disconnection from the conversations. I hear more about the bling – bling and i start to glaze over. When I hear about the pf-70 and MS – 70‘s Jefferson nickel and I just can’t bring myself to make comments. I simply don’t understand the thrill of that nickel. I am not criticizing the new collectors, I just don’t get it.

I believe that maybe the; grading companies, US and foreign mints, and tv infomercials have promoted collecting in such a way that makes a common coin now extremely valuable. Are these collectors following the lead of the above mentioned entities? or are the above entities responding to the new collectors? Maybe a little of both?

What is the difference between holding a slabed pf-70 Franklin half and a 1799 Silver Dollar in your hand? To me it is a mile apart. That Franklin in a standard mint package would mean the same to me as that pf-70. But that 1799 Silver dollar in au condition is a coin that I could look at for an hour and still be entertained. Knowing how old it is and how far in time it has traveled makes me gitty. I may even consider selling my first born to own it (kidding). But on the other hand, maybe the two are not that far apart. If that person holding the ms-70 feels the same excitement when I hold that 1799, we share a common bond with each other based in that little piece of silver. For me this article is more of a question mark than a statement. I am still working to understand the new collector and Maybe he is trying to understand me as well.

This is no joke, with the flood of fake coins of every type and grade we are in a crisis. I don’t think any of the collecting societies have hit this one hard enough or put enough emphasis on the problem. To make matters worse, it doesn’t seem to even make a blip on the radar of our government. I guess when your approval rating is the lowest ever and with: economy, war and terrorism on your plate I guess the preservation of the integrity of your history is not really that important. I may sound a little cynical but with laws already in place to prevent the corruption of our history, no one seems to be actively enforcing the law.

With bush’s free trade deals with other countries we have seen children’s toys come over with lead paint, melamine-tainted food to boost the protein content, and fake coins coming from china, is this how Bush’s free trade deal with china is supposed to work? – And at the end of his term in office he wants’ another free trade deal with Columbia, I guess that means that we can get cocaine a cheaper price than before. Sorry for the rant, but I blame most of the current problems on an administration that doesn’t seem to care.

Back to the real problem we are facing. What can we do to prevent this tragedy? first off I think that it is too late to make a real impact. I believe that the majority of these fakes are getting through e-bay. We can do small things especially when buying coins from e-bay if the location is China, simply don’t bid. That will hopefully be one less fake coin getting into our hobby. Contact e-bay if you see a suspicious coin.

Don’t rely on the grading companies to get it right. They even admit that a fake can get past them. No one really knows how many fakes are in slabs, simply because no one knows they are fakes. I have seen these Chinese fakes and they are extremely good, they fake every coin from a bust dime to a standing liberty quarter, to a Jefferson nickel, ancients, and pillar dollars. No specific dates or types that can be ruled out. If china can make a buck, they will In any grade. That low grade 1916 d merc dime ag or g condition is not immune. Look for low grade coins being faked. They will use the correct metal content as well. One examiner said that the only way you can tell with some of these fakes is with a spectrum analyzer to detect trace elements, Chinese silver has different trace elements than the authentic us coin. But who has the means to do this kind of test on their coins.

I am looking forward to your responses, Question: What can we do to protect our hobby? – Please reply.
